Is My Well Drying Up? Signs, Causes, and How to Tell

“Is my well drying up?” is one of the most common calls we get, and the honest answer surprises most owners: in the large majority of cases, the well has not run out of water. The water level has simply fallen below where the pump sits. The aquifer is still down there — the pump just can’t reach it anymore.
That distinction matters, because it changes the fix, the cost, and the urgency. Here’s how to read what your system is telling you.
Symptoms of a Well Drying Up
Wells rarely quit all at once. The progression usually runs in this order:
- A puff of air at the end of a long draw. The last minute of a shower sputters, or the washing machine finishes its fill with a knock in the pipes. Short draws still seem fine.
- Pressure that fades partway through use. Water starts strong, then thins out the longer you run it.
- Sputtering that starts sooner each time. What used to happen at the end of a shower now happens two minutes in.
- Sediment, grit, or cloudiness. As the level drops, the pump draws from nearer the bottom of the well, where fine material has settled.
- The pump runs but pressure never builds. The pump is moving water faster than the formation can feed the well.
- Air, then nothing. The intake is above the water line.
Any of these on their own can have another cause. It’s the pattern — gradual onset over weeks, worse with heavy use, better after a rest — that points at the water level rather than the equipment.
The One Symptom That Points Straight at the Well
If you take away one diagnostic from this page, make it this one:
A well that is running low recovers with rest. Broken equipment does not.
Stop using water for several hours — overnight works best. If the system runs normally the next morning and then fades again after a shower or two, the well is refilling slowly between draws, and the water level is your problem. That overnight recovery is the well physically taking hours to seep back up to a usable level.
A failing pump, a waterlogged pressure tank, or a bad pressure switch behaves identically at 6 a.m. and at 10 p.m. Rest does nothing for it.
Is It the Well, or Something Else?
Several ordinary failures produce symptoms that look exactly like a well drying up. Sorting them out before spending money is the whole game.

The most frequent impostor by far is a waterlogged pressure tank, which makes the pump short-cycle on and off every few seconds and mimics almost every drying-up symptom. What You Can Safely Check Yourself
Before calling anyone, you can gather information that makes the visit faster and cheaper:
- Run the overnight rest test described above, and write down what happened.
- Check the pressure gauge at the pressure tank while someone runs a tub. Note where the needle sits and whether it bounces.
- Look at your breaker and pressure switch. A tripped breaker is worth knowing about before you assume the worst.
- Check your sediment filter. A filter nobody has changed in two years produces a very convincing impression of a dying well.
- Find your State of Texas Well Report. It lists total depth, the water level when the well was completed, and often the pump setting. The gap between that record and today is the single most useful document a contractor can see.
- Note the timeline. When did it start, and what was the weather and household demand doing then?
What not to do: don’t keep restarting the pump to see if water comes back. If the pump is pulling air, every restart is doing real damage to a part that costs thousands to replace. Cut the breaker and leave it off.
What a Contractor Actually Measures
A diagnosis of “the well is drying up” should rest on measurements, not guesses. Expect a contractor to establish:
- Standing water level — how far down the water sits today, measured with a level meter or weighted tape
- Pump setting depth — where the pump hangs, and how much water is above it
- Total well depth — and whether the well has silted in and lost usable depth
- Drawdown and recovery rate — how far the level falls while pumping and how fast it comes back, which is the real measure of yield
- Pump amperage draw — compared against the nameplate rating; a pump running in air pulls noticeably fewer amps
Those five numbers separate “lower the pump” from “deepen the well” from “the pump is shot and the well is fine.” Insist on the water level being measured before any pump work is quoted.
If the Well Really Is Going Low: Your Options
Ordered roughly from least to most expensive:
- Lower the pump. If there’s usable water below the current pump position and enough casing to work with, this is the cheapest and most common fix. Many wells were simply set conservatively high at installation.

Is It Drought, or Is the Well Finished?
A well that dips during a dry summer and recovers after good rain is behaving normally for North Texas. Most residential wells here draw from the Trinity or Woodbine at roughly 200 to 600 feet; wells shallower than about 150 feet respond fastest to surface conditions and are the most drought-sensitive.
The concerning pattern is a well that doesn’t come back. The First Thing to Do Today
If your faucets are sputtering or pulling air right now:
- Shut off the breaker to the pump. This is the one action that protects the expensive part.
- Stop non-essential water use so whatever is in the well can recover.
- Write down the timeline and the results of the overnight rest test.
- Call a licensed well contractor and ask for the water level to be measured before any work is quoted.
Catching a dropping water level while the pump is still healthy usually means a service call. Waiting until the pump has run itself dry usually means a replacement on top of it. The gap between those two outcomes is measured in days.
