Wells around Lindsay draw mainly from the Antlers, the Trinity sand that reaches the surface — the outcrop — across western and northwestern Cooke County. Because the Glen Rose limestone is absent here, the Trinity’s Paluxy and Twin Mountains sands merge into the single unit geologists call the Antlers, up to about 900 feet thick with clay beds through the middle. Where it outcrops around Lindsay the Antlers is unconfined, so wells tend to be shallower than in central and eastern Cooke County — and more responsive to drought. The Woodbine, the county’s other water source, forms an outcrop band just east toward Gainesville and is a minor factor here.
